When all the selections were sent out to the arrangers I was about to say I couldn’t do any because I had just painfully broken my arm which was useless and I couldn’t drive to find flower materials. But when I saw this artwork I decided that maybe I could just use all dried natural materials I had already collected on nature walks. So you see a Japanese vase filled with little stones and dried colorful mushrooms for butterfly wings, mossy bark with tiny winged mushrooms, bent twigs and all sorts of dried pods, pussy willows, wildflowers and grasses from meadows and garden to interpret the artist’s swirls and shapes of nature.

Calder is one of my favorite artists and I had the pleasure of seeing the Calder-Picasso exhibit in 2019 at the Picasso Museum in Paris. I was immediately drawn to the student’s red and black inspiration. I knew the flowers needed to be bright red, and it was important that they be positioned at heights and angles, similar to the rhythm of the art. I combined the red flowers with natural vines to create the arch, adding ivy for a pop of greenery in the floral piece.

When I saw the multicultural cuisine pottery plate with its mangos, I immediately thought of birds of paradise. The croissant was a challenge, but it gave me a chance to try rolling the ti leaves, and I used some curls of sycamore bark to repeat the croissant shape. St. Johnswort berries seemed perfect for the blueberries, but I had to paint them with acrylic paint to get the dark color.

For this identity mask I decided to only suggest the pale blue of the mask with the tweedia and caspia and focus the arrangement on the colors of the butterflies. I chose white chrysanthemums, orange gerber daisies, and sunflowers because of their flat shapes — like wings — and paired two blooms of each together. The iris were also selected because they suggest butterflies in flight. I painted thin twigs black and placed them in pairs to add a vertical element hinting at butterfly antennae. The small yellow chysanthemums were a nod to the stars on the face. I couldn’t resist making black lines on a white bowl as a reflection of the white butterfly’s pattern.

The graffiti on the brick wall brought to mind a derelict or abandoned site. The rusty pan I obtained at Take-It-or-Leave-It at the transfer station seemed appropriate for the base. The two dyed carnations indicated the superimposed faces. Old bricks were stacked and crushed stone covered the support material as might be found in such a setting. I wanted insignificant flowers to beautify the area, yet call attention to the two portraits. Beauty can be found in all typed of settings!

This abstract photography drew me in, and I could almost feel the distinct textures of the four quadrants. For this arrangement, I tried to mimic the four feelings with a metal leaf, a brown container with circular motifs, white carnations and crabapple branches that were mostly a woody brown. I wanted the arrangement to be in browns and whites, all in contrasting textures like the four parts of the abstract photography.

The reason why I chose to do the project on my lemon tree was because my mom has been growing this lemon tree for many years and it’s pretty cool and we are Greek .

Stavros’ art made me think about how many ways you can reflect a lemon tree — the leaves, branches, and fruit — to bring out unique colors shapes and patterns. The art inspired me to find similar patterns in nature and create an experience to show how a person might discover and enhance them in everyday life.
