Owen’s self-portrait during covid times speaks to all of us – all the things we are missing swirling in our heads, but even though we are missing out on a lot of fun activities, the bright colors and energy of the picture convey Owen’s optimism and joy which I tried to express with brightly colored and cheerful flowers. I dressed the vase as Owen is pictured, in a blue sweater and colored mask, and used with pencils topped with some of the items that Owen put in his self-portrait as accents. Ironically, I was required to self-isolate at the time I was making this arrangement and family members brought the flowers to me and Garden Club members ferried the arrangement to Five Sparks for the show, so I could remain safely distant!

The Provincetown Poster was a challenge both because of its geometric structures and its use of color. I really wasn’t sure how to approach it until I saw the boat shaped white vessel I used for the container. It reminded me of a lobster boat and to my mind, perfectly suited both the color of the primary building and the “Lobster Pot” sign. I used a mass arrangement to convey the substance and the solidity of the buildings and design, and incorporated the sunset colors of the scene as well as the lobster reds.

The color scheme of my design was because of the assignment and the material I used was paint. The reason for the bike and Star design was because I have recently started mountain biking and I really like it. The stars are because I have always loved camping out in the woods and looking up at the stars.

This was my first time making a flower arrangement involving more than putting flowers in a vase. The planning was fun. I had a lot of help and support from the experienced arrangers.

Since I was creating a small environment, I knew I wanted to choose earthy tones while still having certain aspects stand out. Though because it was ceramic paint, I was not 100% sure on how the colors would end up. Ultimately, though the colors are not how I imagined, it was still a fun process of sculpting and designing.

At the time I was really interested in small natural looking sculptures and wanted to reflect that on this piece. On top of that, I wanted to incorporate multiple textures in the design to be able to experiment and try out different ways to sculpt. I am very thrilled to be able to feature my work in this show and think it is a great way to kick off spring as well as being able to look at local art and floral arrangements from your own couch!

The picture itself drew me in especially the eyes on the self-portrait. It’s the feeling I get wearing a mask. Does anyone see me?

The background colors were vivid and drew me towards strong blues and orange. The self-portrait had to be represented with a flower that showcased a distinctive “eye”.

The arrangement did turn out the way I wanted until I transported it in the car!

My art assignment was a self-portrait. We were given a mirror and told to draw the top half of ourselves. I decided to use colored pencils to color it. I was very surprised how good the arrangement was, the flowers were lovely and the color scheme matched well. I also liked the grass for my braids! I found it interesting being part of this event, and fun!

I loved how direct & straight-forward Khivi portrayed herself, with beautiful long braids & red sweatshirt.

She included sports, favorite treats, and, of course, technology: a perfect 7th grade tween personality.I wanted to represent the freshness of youth in various pastel shades and feature her braids worn up as a special look.

I hoped the red thread and yellow mums would nod to her heritage as an East Asian-American.

My assignment was to create a cubist piece of a photo I had taken.

I chose this picture to adapt to the cubist style because it is the summer camp I go to, and in my opinion, it is one of the prettiest places in the world. And I chose the color scheme directly off the picture by using the color selection tool.

My inspiration was from the assignment to make a cubist piece, but I chose the camp picture because it had lovely fall colors and great dimensions in the photograph that would transfer nicely into the cubist style.

Cubism is the first assignment in Graphic Design. The students learn to use the tools provided in Adobe Illustrator. They create a graphic design inspired by the Cubist movement began by Pablo Picasso.

I was immediately struck by the beauty of this artwork. I was hoping that Deb Dowson would assign Lin Lin’s art to me.

Moss and lichen from the garden and buds from branches represent the barrenness of the world in 2020.

I wish I could have used more colorful flowers in the other sphere. I tried it but the different shapes of the flowers made the roundness of the world disappear.

The beargrass is the transition, the awakening?

When seeing the artwork and the arrangement together gave me more ideas, e.g. cover the bark with blue hydrangea to give the right side a more optimistic image

This is an artwork that made me think, that intrigued me, touched me and one night I even dreamt about it .

I was drawn to the Basquiat-influenced self-portrait: I love its colors and helter-skelter style. I knew immediately that I would try to construct a head-shaped floral arrangement, complete with wire glasses, probably a naïve move for a beginner! But I had so much fun imagining what floral material to use and how to put it all together, and was pleased with the end product, even if it didn’t turn out exactly as I had first imagined.

The piece of art that I chose this year was Zentangle universe by Jason Zhao. I found the art to be colorful, playful and joyful. I chose colorful flowers to represent the joyful feeling The repeated round shapes of flowers and forsythia branches capture the planets. I’ve participated in this project every year because it brings together different ways to express creativity and imagination. I love to view the artwork of our students and then see what my head and hands create. It’s so much fun.

I took this around 8 am before Wednesday classes. My inspiration for this photo was the beautiful morning light and leaves. At the time, I was experimenting with taking photos close to the ground to gain a different perspective.
